Taking care of your piano is very important. You’ve spent a lot of money to buy a piano, and you need it to stay in good working condition. Just like getting an oil change for your car, a piano tuning is important to the health of your piano. If your piano is out of tune for too long, it makes it more difficult in the future for a tuner. Piano’s are delicate instruments and we recommend that you have a piano tuner come at least every six months. The piano tuners that come will be able tune the piano to the correct pitch, and keep it in fine working order for years to come.
Why does a piano go out of tune?
There are two main reasons that a piano can go out of tune. When the piano is new, the strings must continue to stretch and the wood needs to settle. During the first year, it is important to have the piano tuned about four times. After this initial settling period, twice a year is usually sufficient. The other reason pianos go out of tune is because of climate change. The wood in the soundboard of the piano swells as the humidity goes up, raising the pitch of the piano. Whereas when the climate is fairly dry, the wood in the soundboard flattens making the pitch drop. The drop in pitch in the dry times outweighs the rise in the humid times making the overall pitch of the piano drop each year that it is not tuned.
